Recently, Square Enix released a couple of screenshots for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake, and one of those screenshots depicted Cloud taking cover behind a crate as an enemy fired at him with a gun. In an interview with Famitsu, director Tetsuya Nomura spoke about this and went into detail about the same.
When asked whether the cover mechanic was something that would feature in the combat of the game, Nomura said, “In the story, in situations where you’re sneaking around, you won’t just be able to march down the middle of the path. The original version had random encounters, and such parts were in the realm of imagination, but since this title is seamless and you see the path that you’re infiltrating, I decided it was necessary for the sake of realism.”
“You can use it in ways such as to hide in cover until enemy soldiers move along, or to throw a hand grenade from cover to annihilate the enemy,” he continued. “Of course, those who find it bothersome can just throw themselves into the fight.”
When asked if Barrett could also take cover in the game, Nomura confirmed that that was indeed the case, saying that “there is a special element in gunners”, but refused to give any more details.
Recently, Nomura also talked about how the combat in Final Fantasy VII Remake would be action based rather than command based. Read all about it here.
Thanks, Gematsu!
