Final Fantasy 7 Remake – “Players Get To Choose How To Play”

Square Enix wants to make sure the game is accessible to veteran fans and newcomers alike.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is one of the most highly anticipated games coming out in 2020 – a year that’s already jam-packed with massive video game releases – but for Square Enix, it must also be a pretty daunting project. It’s remaking a beloved classic, and as such, has to strike the perfect balance between being new and modern, and being a respectful homage to and recreation of the game it is based on.

That goes double for combat. While Final Fantasy 7 was originally a turn-based game, that brand of combat has become something of a rarity in RPGs these days – Final Fantasy especially. But in spite of its new combat system, Square Enix wants to make sure that Final Fantasy 7 Remake isn’t too complex or inaccessible. Speaking with Time, Neal Pabon, a senior manager with product marketing at Square Enix, said that the remake will let players choose how they want to play the game and what style suits them best.

“Players get to choose how to play,” said Pabon. “This is the perfect entry point for Final Fantasy.”

While Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s combat is, in its moment-to-moment gameplay, quite action-oriented, it also has a tactical mode to allow for more ATB-focused battles. Meanwhile, there’s also a classic mode for those who want a turn-based experience (or something close to it, anyway).

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is out on March 3rd, 2020 for PlayStation 4.
