Fortnite: Battle Royale Mode Hits 1 Million Players On Day 1

They are off to a great start.

It looks like Epic’s entry into the battle royale genre has paid off in spades- their battle royale mode for their game Fortnite apparently managed to hit 1 million players on its first day (which was yesterday) alone, Epic shared on Twitter.

Going by the general reception to the mode on forums like NeoGAF, it sounds like Epic has managed to truly nail the battle royale format with Fortnite– apparently, things like destructible cover (which prevent camping) make this a very compelling alternative to PUBG. It is also, going by initial reports, extremely well optimized.

Of course, there are caveats to keep in mind here- unlike PUBG, which costs $30, Fortnite‘s battle royale mode is free to play for everyone. It is also available on three systems instead of just one (though PUBG will close that gap a bit when it launches on Xbox One later this year). Given PUBG developer Bluehole’s perplexing insinuation that Fortnite is unfairly ripping PUBG off, it will be interesting to see how Fortnite‘s battle royale mode continues to do in the coming weeks and months.
