Epic’s Fortnite has had a roller coaster of a journey since its original announcement, all the way back in 2012- for the longest time, the game was basically vaporware, before it finally launched last year with a thud, and no one actually caring about it. Rapid updates from Epic, as well as the appropriation of the popular battle royale style gameplay, made popular by PUBG, led to the game rising in popularity, until now, it has overtaken PUBG itself by most metrics.
It’s time to add another metric to said list of metrics, though- Fortnite is now the most viewed game on Twitch, overtaking PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and other popular titles such as Monster Hunter World, Counter Strike GO, League of Legends, DOTA 2, and Hearthstone. Compared to PUBG, Fortnite was watched twice as much- which is insane.
A lot of Fortnite‘s rise has to do with receptiveness to fan feedback, easy availability across all systems (it is free to play, and available on PS4, which PUBG, costing $30, is not available on), and the fact that it’s just a more polished game. It remains to be seen whether or not PUBG can come back from this.
