Gabe Newell: Apple have zero interest in interoperating with other parties in controlling the living room

No difference between PC and TV gaming.

Gabe Newell has been pretty vocal nowadays, and speaking to The Nerdist Podcast, he had a lot more to say about Apple and downplayed the differences between PC and TV gaming.

“We thought the distinction between living rooms and PCs was artificial,” he said.

“That’s why we did 10-foot [Big Picture Mode], and why we’re putting 10-foot into our games onto Linux. We don’t think there’s any reasons why these are islands. We don’t think you have a different set of friends when you go into your living room… We think you can extend the PC totally to be in the living room.”

He also had some things to say about Apple and how they aren’t interesting in working with other players but want to be isolated and do their own thing.

“Why doesn’t my game experience continue whether I’m on mobile, in the living room, at work or on an airplane. It’s not because it isn’t technically feasible, and it’s not because it isn’t the right thing to do. It’s because the people who control mobile right now, Apple, have zero interest in interoperating well with the people who currently are controlling the living room, and they’re completely interested in creating this silo separate from what you’re doing on your laptop or your desktop.”

It’s a known fact that Valve hates closed platforms, however, looking at the recent Steam Box that was revealed it looks like Valve is trying to be a little accommodating when it comes to making a presence in the living room.

In the past, Gabe Newell has been pretty critical of Windows 8 as well, calling it a catastrophe in the gaming space. Recently, Valve has also confirmed that they will be launching the Steam Box. So looks like it’s all happening at Valve.
