In November, Netflix announced that it had partnered with The Coalition and Microsoft to develop live action film and adult animated series based on the Gears of War franchise. Now, it has been confirmed who the film’s screenwriter will be.
As confirmed via a report by Variety, the Gears of War movie will be written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts. Spaihts is best known for writing 2016’s Doctor Strange, Dune, and its upcoming sequel, Dune: Part Two. He also has writing credits for Passengers, The Darkest Hour, Prometheus, and The Mummy.
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” said Spaihts. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life,” The Coalition said. “Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
There’s no word yet on when the movie will release, who it will be directed by, or who it will star.
As for the future of the Gears of War franchise where its games are concerned, reports have claimed that Gears 6 is going to be The Coalition’s next game, with job listings indicating that the sequel is under development. As per leaks, a remastered collection of previous Gears of War titles is also in the works.
