Gears of War series sells more than 16 million units; limited editions represent 10% of total shipments

Dana Cowley, senior PR manager of Epic Games, has revealed that, Gears of War 3 has shipped more than 16 million units worldwide and is one of the few billion dollar selling franchises.

“Gears of War 3 sold more than 1 million copies within its first week of release. It is the fastest pre-selling Xbox 360-exclusive title in the platform’s history,” Cowley revealed in an interview with Industrygamers.

“The Gears of War series has sold more than 16 million copies, initiating it as one of the few billion-dollar video game franchises.”

It was also revealed that Epic developed the game for two-and-a-half years, which is much more than that of Gears of War 3. It was vital in them pushing out a polished product.

“It allowed us to conduct a multiplayer beta, polish the game extensively and ship the most fully featured product Epic has ever created to date,” said Cowley.

Guy Welch, Global Product Manager, Xbox Marketing for Microsoft added that limited editons for the game were made truly limited as only 10% of the total shipments were contained that.

“We can’t confirm exact numbers, however Gears of War 3 limited editions represented fewer than 10% of the total Gears 3 units shipped to retail. It was important to keep the limited editions truly limited,” he said.
