God of War Will Feature Dynamic Combat Between Kratos And His Son, Developer Reveals

Interplay between two characters in combat.

God of War will feature the very first time that Kratos is not solitary throughout an entire adventure- while he has often had temporary companions over the course of his previous odysseys, he largely acts alone (mostly due to his penchant of greatly endangering, if not outright killing, people around him).

But this time, he will have his own son with him- and of course, he’s not going to put him in any danger. Having his son with him all the time opens the game up to some very interesting gameplay possibilities, which the developers explained recently.

“There’s a really cool move where he [Atreus] jumps on the back enemy’s back and you hit the Square button, which is for the son, and he’ll jump above the enemy’s back and start firing arrows, and then you can throw your axe. And that’s just one example of the dynamism between him [Kratos] and Atreus,” the studio’s Marketing Producer, Aaron Kaufman, said to OPM UK to explain the kind of interplay players can expect between the two characters in combat.

If this leads to the series’ traditional combat being opened up to more options and depth, then I personally am all for it. God of War is due out exclusively on the PlayStation 4 early in 2018.
