Batman may be dead in Gotham Knights, but four of his protegees are taking his place, with Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood all being playable. The open world action RPG will allow players to switch between those characters at will- and by extension, also to never switch from one to the other at all. A byproduct of that, interestingly, is that the game’s storytelling will make adjustments based on who you’re playing as.
That, in turn, means that a single playthrough of Gotham Knights won’t be enough to see all the story content in the game. Speaking with PLAY magazine (via MP1st), game director Geoff Ellenor confirmed the same.
“You will not see all of it in a single playthrough,” he said. “Just because there’s so much content that is unique to the hero’s perception of what’s going on and what’s happened.”
Where cutscenes are concerned, cinematics director Wilson Mui explained that while scenes will play out in a similar manner, players will see changes based on who they’re playing as in that moment.
“Structurally, we’re gonna have a very similar scene that overall falls in the flow for each character, but each character has their own version of that,” Mui said. “So because, you know, they move differently, they speak differently, they have different histories with all the different characters, it allows us to make a scene that would be their version of that. If you were to look and play Batgirl, you’re gonna get Batgirl’s version, but if you play Robin, you’re gonna get Robin’s version of that same scene. Some of them are very similar in how they do it, but they’re gonna have little subtle differences.”
Gotham Knights is due out on October 21 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
