Guild Wars 2 Sets Pre-Launch Record of 400,000 Simultaneous Users Online

Over one million units averaged in sales thus far.

How stoked is NCSoft about the launch of the long-awaited Guild Wars 2? Consider for a moment that we live in an age of World of Warcraft. Now also consider that not only did Guild Wars 2 set a pre-launch record for 400,000 users online, but it did so not having been anything loosely resembling WoW.

Time had the goods, talking about exactly how many people played the game. The article states, “NCsoft is sharing preliminary numbers for all you MMO comparison wonks: Over one million players paid to play the game ($60 standard, $150 collector’s, and it’s free-to-play thereafter) during the three-day early start. And that’s not counting the one-day preorders or, obviously, whatever sales the game enjoys today as it officially launches.”

So then what is this about pre-launch records? Isn’t 1 million significantly higher than 400K? According to Time, “That’s sales, but how many people are actually playing this thing? During the headstart phase, NCsoft says demand for the game topped 400,000 simultaneous online players, calling it a ‘record-breaking’ figure for an MMO pre-launch.”

The enthusiasm for Guild Wars 2 is obviously at a fever pitch and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Here’s hoping the series gets the success it rightly deserves.
