Halo 5 Multiplayer Uses Dedicated Servers for Matchmaking and Custom Games

Executive producer Josh Holmes says "there is no P2P".

343 Industries executive producer Josh Holmes has confirmed on Beyond Entertainment’s forums that the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians will use dedicated servers for its multiplayer.

“We only have dedicated servers for MP in Halo 5: Guardians. That’s true for matchmaking AND customs. There is no P2P.”

While peer to peer (P2P) hosting is often considered a more affordable way of connecting during games, it’s dependant on the quality of other players’ connections. One player with an excellent connection could dominate the others. Dedicated servers eliminates this by having a physical data centre for players to connect to, resulting in the same connection quality all-around.

This will be the first time the series has used only dedicated servers. Previous games relied on P2P matchmaking while Halo: The Master Chief Collection featured a mix of P2P and dedicated servers.
