Regardless of what one thinks of Hideo Kojima, and opinions are strong with the more polarized than usual reviews of his latest game in Death Stranding, it’s impossible to deny the Creator hasn’t had a major impact in video games. His Metal Gear Solid series helped to reshape the industry into a more cinematic-focused one that we still see influences of today in major blockbuster titles, and let’s be honest, absolutely no one can straddle that fourth wall quite like he can. For all of that, it seems he will be given the highest honor of the BAFTA.
As announced by the Academy, on April 2nd, they will bestow upon Kojima a Fellowship. It is an award given to those who have had a major impact on the world of entertainment. Kojima’s contributions to the stealth genre and general interactive storytelling are cited. Through his career, he’s been nominated for seven BAFTAs, with the latest batch of nominations coming March 3, so it’s possible he’ll add to that.
Kojima and his production studio are hard at work on their next game already, but I’m sure the man will take a little time out of his busy schedule to accept the Fellowship in April.
