To celebrate the Xbox One’s first year anniversary, Microsoft has been sending out small, token thank you gifts to everyone- these range from free games to free videos. As a goodwill gesture, they are great; that said, there are some people who have not yet received the emails with their codes and gifts yet.
Speaking on Twitter, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg clarified that users can’t receive e-mails with these codes unless they specifically opt in to Microsoft’s marketing e-mails for Xbox Live while signing up (this can be changed later in settings); most people do it. Some do not, and that would be why they haven’t received their gift yet.
“We have to have their permission to email them. Most have opted in. Of course things like sunset free for 24 hours does not require [permission],” Greenberg said. “I am trying to help out folks that I can. Some we have delivered via the live service. I believe we hit 99% here.”
This isn’t the first time this issue has cropped up this year- earlier this year, people had this exact same issue when Nintendo was sending out Club Nintendo Platinum members codes for the demo to Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.
