Joe Montana Football ’16 Is In Active Development

And it is using Unreal Engine.

Does anyone remember Joe Montana Football? The football star athlete was the face and brand for Sega’s football game series (that ultimately concluded in 1995), and he has been teasing that the classic sports franchise may be making a comeback this year. Actually, today, he all but confirmed it on Twitter.

Now before you go off thinking that this is probably just a smartphone game, know that he also confirmed that the game is being made in Unreal Engine 4. And that he tweeted a picture. And that it really does not look like a game being made for smartphones or tablets at all. As a matter of fact, unsubstantiated rumors are stating that the game might be exclusive to Xbox One, with an E3 announcement, and a release later this summer, but that part remains unconfirmed, so whether you choose to believe it or not depends entirely on you.

Of course, all of this is ignoring the obvious elephant in the room- with EA holding the exclusive license for all NFL related branding, athletes, and licensing, how exactly will this game even work? It remains to be seen how that very obvious pitfall is avoided, but on my part, I hope that it is. Judging by how shitty Madden games have gotten in recent years, EA could use the competition.
