As revealed earlier, thatgamecompany went bankrupt developing the critically acclaimed PSN adventure Journey. Many of those who worked on the game weren’t even paid. The game has seen a good amount of success since then, but speaking to Family Gamer TV, studio co-founder Jenova Chen has revealed that the developer has only now begun to receive royalties for the game.
Chen stated that, “It seems that Journey sales are not really going away. I’m quite curious to see what happens this quarter.”
Thatgamecompany has managed to recover costs on the game itself, but now they can bask in the profits. The developer went bankrupt developing the title due to an extra year of development that was required. This required all of its backup funding, resulting in the developer going bankrupt by the time the game finally released. However, Journey has since garnered much acclaim, going on to win several Game of the Year awards and inspiring industry figures.
