Reviews for Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts 3 are now live, at least for outlets that managed to receive review codes in time. Currently, the PS4 version has Metascore of 87, based on reviews from 13 publications. The highest score is a 98 from XGN, with the lowest being 80 from multiple sources.
One of those sources is GameSpot, which praised both the worlds and characters of Disney and Pixar. Combat was also complimented for being “simple, slick, and super exciting”. Downsides include the convoluted nature of the Keyblade War’s story, the sparseness of some worlds, and the general lack of satisfaction from Gummi Ship gameplay.
IGN’s score is 87 and was also full of praise for the worlds, exploration, and combat. It did note that the storytelling “could use some punching up,” but as a whole, “Kingdom Hearts 3 is a fulfilling evolution and resolution of the franchise that shows it’s still full of heart.”
Game Informer scored the game a solid 95 out of 100, noting that while it isn’t perfect, it does succeed in various ways. Reads the review, “Kingdom Hearts 3 is the game I’ve been waiting for. After finishing it, I was delighted by how satisfied I was with the journey.” The finale was described as “triumphant”, with the review also saying that the series overall “still has a lot of heart, and that’s what makes it so endearing.”
Kingdom Hearts 3 is out on January 29th for Xbox One and PS4. Stay tuned for in the coming days for our thoughts on the game. Or you could just read up on whether review scores even matter for game like this.
