Development

Boss Key officially unveiled LawBreakers at Pax East in March of 2010. The company revealed the game, still known as Project Bluestreak back then would be running on the Unreal Engine 4. “We considered several options regarding what technology we’d use to build Project BlueStreak. Ultimately, we found ourselves coming full circle to my friends at Epic Games and the elegant solution for rapid and quality game development that is Unreal Engine 4,” Bleszinski said during the announcement. “We look forward to making a top-tier product through this partnership.”

In August of 2015, Boss Key unveiled the official name for Project BlueStreak was actually LawBreakers. The company went through the unusual route of teasing the arrival of this game by using community centered games and contests in a teaser campaign where new clues were shared daily, and fans earned VIP rewards that ranged from future alpha or beta access to exclusive signed game art and other prizes were given out. The announcement also had a live action trailer that was geared to show the warring factions that are fighting in the game. The developers then showed off another trailer on August 28th that gave players a deeper look into the game.

During the reveal, Boss Key also announced there would be a short, playable demo at PAX West that would show one map from the game as well as four different characters available in the title. The game has been slated to release in 2016 for the PC but there hasn’t been an official release date announced.

Story

LawBreakers is a competitive team-based FPS set in an alternate future in which the world has been divided into two factions  following a huge cataclysmic event known as ‘The Shattering’. The Shattering is not specifically explained but the event changed gravity on planet Earth forever. After this particular event, the world managed to recover and ushered in a whole host of new age technological advancements providing gravity manipulation.

Along with these high tech devices, there were a brand of supplements produced whose use grants near-superhuman abilities such as super strength, speed and the ability to jump far and high.  The new tech was initially something that led to better peace on the planet but eventually a couple of factions coalesced onto opposite sides. The first side is a peacekeeping organization charged with upholding the law of the world. On the other side of the conflict is a ruthless and highly-organized crime syndicate bent on breaking any number of laws that are in existence in this world.

The story of the game eventually comes down to players picking one side or another. Will they join the cause of those who are keeping the peace and following the law, or will players decide to take on a role amongst the breakers of those laws?

Gameplay

LawBreakers is a first person shooter that has many of the expected elements from that genre. There are also some aspects that are unique to a Science Fiction game in this genre. There are also aspects that are unique to this game. The game is free-to-play and will reportedly have a robust online multi-player experience that will pit PC players who have chosen one side or another against each other.

The company has said you won’t be moving through a desolate wasteland but a world that has been repaired and looks quite impressive. There will be buildings that will play a part in the background and will also have a role to play in the actual action, even if its just as a way to avoid the blasts and explosions that will be going on all around the players. Among the weapons that will be used in the game is something called the ANVIL brand Shoulder-mounted Rocket Launcher. These weapons are the primary assault weapons for one kind of law enforcement officer known as the T.A.S.C. Enforcer.

Another weapon that will be available for use in the game is called the Taser Machete. This is one of the game’s melee weapons. LawBreakers is a game that takes a great deal of pride in its realism when it comes to the weapons and how they work. The game has actually come up a number of different companies that are producers of the weapons. The Taser Machete is made by a company named New Wellington which is known for creating blades that offer an elegant allure with high-tech functionality. New Wellington, along with the other weapon manufacturers in the game, help define the strong, recognizable design for each weapon. Each New Wellington weapon, regardless of type (gun, melee, etc) will share similar characteristics.

Other weapons and accessories include the Aerator, which is basically a futuristic machine gun. Players will also be able to use accessories such as a glide kit, which is sort of like a jet pack, only it allows players to fall slowly and under control.

Characters

So far there are four characters that the developers have confirmed for the game. The Breacher is the Law’s primary soldier who has a number of abilities and weapons thought of when talking about soldiers in FPS games. The Cronos is a brute and has a high durability while the Maverick is a combatant that uses a jet. Lastly, we have Kitsune who specializes in close combat.
