Ubisoft has released some new gameplay of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope along with lots of new details courtesy of lead producer Xavier Manzanares. He spoke of Bowser’s addition to the game and how it was meant to be a surprise for players. Of course, he also fits the kinds of combos that the team wanted to implement in combat.
A closer look is provided at Beacon Beach and Pristine Peaks, two planets that players will explore. Beacon Beach is supposed to be a bright, sunny location, but it’s overrun by darkness. Removing it is important and also unlocks new quests. Pristine Peaks has a large mountain that players must ascend and a palace full of puzzles and a “big fight.” Each planet offers multiple zones and regions with lots to explore and see.
There are also the Wardens, rulers of the planets who will serve as allies. They range from funny and weird to unique but each has “tons of personality.” Spark Powers were showcased in the last gameplay reveal and are one of the more intriguing aspects of combat. You can equip two per hero and they offer passive and active bonuses.
The Fire Spark can add a fire attack to your weapon and a dash, which can be good for combos and repositioning. Sparks can also protect you from enemies and their Super effects (depending on the type carried). You can equip any Spark with any hero.
As for Techniques, these are abilities specific to heroes. Mixing Sparks, techniques and the hero archetype results in lots of possibilities. An autofill option for builds returns but manual customization still offers the best results. Manzanares also talked about the removal of the grid and cursor. This was done to add more action and fluidity in each turn while making it easier for new players to jump in.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope releases on October 20th for Nintendo Switch. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
