Polygon has unearthed a rather interesting cancelled project from the folks that brought us Metroid Prime and who subsequently went on to form Armature to work on it alongside Keiji Inafune. We’re talking about Maverick Hunter, a first person shooter that reimagined Mega Man X as a more gritty action game.
Heck, look at X’s appearance. It’s friggin’ demonic.
The game would feature several familiar elements from the X series including Charge Shots, Wall Jumping, Dashing and much more. You could also equip the weapons of fallen foes and even partake in platforming sequences.
Unfortunately, it seems the project began dying out when Inafune left Capcom. Which is a shame, since the X series seemed more in tune for a gritty franchise like this than the regular Mega Man games.
Nevertheless, hit up the link to see what could have been. And here’s a fun fact for you: the above Mega Man suit was designed by the same concept artist who would go on to create Iron Man’s armour for the Marvel’s movie franchise.
