Update: Microsoft’s Mike Ybarra has confirmed that these new policy updates won’t apply to Xbox Live (but existing rules will remain in effect). The new policy will however apply to other Microsoft services such as Skype, Office etc.
Original story:
Microsoft has just updated its Code of Conduct to clarify a few points and changes. Basically, you could now get your account banned if Microsoft deems that you have violated the terms of service. While most of this is nothing new, what is new is that Microsoft has clarified some points which were already present.
Regarding the use of offensive language, Microsoft stated, “We’ve clarified that use of offensive language and fraudulent activity is prohibited. We’ve also clarified that violation of the Code of Conduct through Xbox Services may result in suspensions or bans from participation in Xbox Services, including forfeiture of content licenses, Xbox Gold Membership time, and Microsoft account balances associated with the account.”
Microsoft may also review a user’s content to resolve an issue if the user has allegedly violated the terms and conditions. Regarding this point, the company stated, “We also reserve the right to remove or block Your Content from the Services at any time if it is brought to our attention that it may violate applicable law or these Terms. When investigating alleged violations of these Terms, Microsoft reserves the right to review Your Content in order to resolve the issue. However, we do not monitor the Services and make no attempt to do so.”
While this has clarified some points, it also raises many more questions such as what counts as “offensive language” for example. For now, more clarification is needed on the matter.
