Minecraft Cross Platform Play On Switch Will Use Xbox Live Login; Developers Really Want Sony Cross Play, Too

I wonder if these will count toward's Microsoft's Xbox Live MAU numbers...

Minecraft was announced as getting full cross platform play across every single system and device that it runs on this E3… except PlayStation. In what has become a trend this week, Sony has declined cross platform play (for extremely bizarre reasons), choosing to isolate PSN and keep it silo’d.

Speaking specifically about how Switch cross platform play will work, Mojang CEO Jonas Märtensson explained that things will go through Xbox Live. “That’s pretty unique as well! But everyone that’s in on this, all the platform holders, have been pretty pragmatic and understanding of that what we’re trying to do is create a good experience for the players. We needed a good system to connect everyone, and Xbox Live is a good system,” he said.

He also spoke about Sony’s refusal to allow cross platform play. “We would really like this to come out there as well,” he said, adding that the hold up was not on their end.

At least the usage of Xbox Live makes sense for why Minecraft may have been turned down for cross platform play on PS4… it still does not explain, however, why Sony is blocking Rocket League, which is an entirely independent game from a third party.
