According to new Minecraft head Helen Chiang, the worldwide building phenomenon known as Minecraft has hit two brand new milestones recently, with 144 Million copies sold and 74 Million active monthly players on the game.
144 Million copies is one fantastic number for what began as a passion project in Notch’s basement, first released in early access back in 2009 for PC before expanding onto consoles a few years later. “We just recently set a new record in December for monthly active users, so now we’re at 74 million monthly active users — and that’s really a testament to people coming back to the game, whether it’s through the game updates or bringing in new players from across the world,” she said in an interview to Popsugar.
As the game moves forward, Chiang will mostly stay the course to continue growth. She took over for Matt Booty who went over to oversee Xbox games division, and is focused on continuing to update the game to get closer to that all encompassing vision first seen with the Better Together update of players enjoying together, anywhere.
