Mojang, developer of the insanely successful Minecraft, recently conversed with Develop about their overall office structure. And in many ways, it echoes how Valve usually does things. As Markus ‘Notch’ Persson states “everyone in Mojang can have a say in anything if they’re brazen enough”, reflecting the overall bossless, and relaxed atmosphere they have.
“The atmosphere is usually very relaxed in the office, and we don’t have any middle management or anything like that. I worry about growing, as that could change the mood to something else, so I want us to keep focusing on not making super polished games, as those require larger teams.”
CEO Carl Manneh believes that its developers should “work on stuff they want to work on”, much like Valve where employees plan out their own schedules and do whatever they want to do in a day rather than being slotted on specific projects.
