Capcom’s Monster Hunter series is already a monster hit in its homeland of Japan, and it appears to have been making steady inroads worldwide too; the newest game, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, which launched worldwide alongside the New Nintendo 3DS range on February 13 (its Japanese launch was last year) has now reached shipments of 3 million units worldwide, Capcom confirmed. While a bulk of those sales have come from Japan (obviously), it appears that the game’s global launch has caused an impact, with stores in the US reporting sellouts, and the game debuting at number 4 on the UK charts.
The entire series has now grown into one of Capcom’s biggest pillars. Capcom called it a ‘mega-hit,’ confirming that sales of the franchise stand at 32 million units worldwide.
Monster Hunter originally launched on the PlayStation 2, but was only a moderate hit there; the series would not find success until the launch of the PSP ‘Monster Hunter Freedom’ ports, which is when it exploded in popularity. Since then, the series has been exclusive to Nintendo platforms, with flagship game launches on Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS.
