Naughty Dog Devs On PS4 Development Challenges, The Last of Us Frame Rate And Uncharted 4

Writing a debuggable and performant multi-core engine is a challenge.

As the new generation of console moves ahead, developers will face new challenges to resolve. This ultimately enables developers to make games that set new boundaries in visuals and gameplay. According to Naughty Dog’s Lead Programmer Christian Gyrling, one of the challenges for this console generation is to develop an optimized multi-core engine.

“The problem to solve this console generation is how to write a debuggable and performant multi-core engine for high-level game logic #PS4,” he tweeted. However he believes it won’t take too long before it is resolved. “Well, it shouldn’t take an entire generation to solve that problem. Then we will come knocking… :),” he said. Christian Gyrling might be hinting towards the challenges that they might be facing in the development of Uncharted 4 as the series is known to utilize crazy logic and physics, the water level in Uncharted 3 comes to mind. But this is just an assumption on our part.

Meanwhile, Marshall Robin who is a programmer at Naughty Dog commented on Polygon’s article about The Last of Us Remastered. According to him the  “the frame rate is a lot less “variable” than the article suggests.”

And finally, Game designer Emilia Schatz tweeted that they are working hard on Uncharted 4 and they can’t wait to reveal more information about the same. On a related note, Emilia designed more than half of the levels in Uncharted 3.

The Last of Us Remastered is due on July 29th, 2014 in North America and August 1st in Europe, whereas Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due in 2015. Stay tuned for more news and updates including our full review of The Last of Us Remastered next week.
