One of the most exciting pieces of information that Microsoft revealed during their E3 press conference was that they were working on a new console. Eurogamer caught up with Xbox Head Phil Spencer and asked him some important questions regarding the future for Xbox consoles.
Regarding the next-gen Xbox console, Spencer stated, “The same team that delivered unprecedented performance with Xbox One X is deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles, where we will once again deliver on our commitment to set the benchmark for console gaming.” For Microsoft, key aspects for the future of Xbox remains to be features like backwards compatibility and developing engaging streaming services.
“What I would say specifically, without announcing anything, is I’m very proud of our track record of compatibility and us respecting the purchase of games you’ve made with us and bringing that to the current generation,” Spencer stated.
Spencer also stated that console transition is becoming a more complex process which is why features like backwards compatibility are important. The focus here is not just on releasing sequels for the next console generation, but about having a platform that can support games that people are already playing. Spencer points to games such as Minecraft and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as examples of this new trend.
The team at Microsoft remain committed to delivering great games for players to experience on their consoles, so we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for the next-generation of Xbox.
