Nintendo Switch Hits 8 Million Units Sold In Japan

It’s only 30,000 units behind PS4 now.

We got the latest sales reports from Japan, and they included an interesting factoid for fans of Nintendo’s hybrid hardware—as of last week, the Switch has passed 8 million units in sales in the land of the rising sun.

It is now only 30,000 units behind the PS4, which is at 8.03 million units sold. This means that, presuming the two consoles sell similarly in next week’s report as they did in this week’s one, the Switch might overtake the PS4 next week. That would make it the most successful console of the generation in the country—though it will still be trailing the 3DS by a fair few million units for the crown of the top selling system, period.

Undoubtedly, upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusives, such as Super Mario Maker 2 and Animal Crossing, will help the Switch bridge that distance soon. It will be interesting to see if a hypothetical 2020 launch for the PS5, however, punctures the Switch’s momentum in Japan at all.
