Nintendo Switch Launches With 331,000 Units Sold In Japan In Debut Week

That's a good debut for the system all around.

Nintendo’s latest system is officially a hit- it had reasonably good start in the UK, Nintendo’s best launch ever in North America, and now it looks to have hit the ground running in Japan as well, where, Famitsu reports, the system sold 330,637 units in its launch week. This number is well above the PS4’s launch numbers there, and far ahead of the launch numbers for the Wii U and PlayStation Vita there.

On the other hand, it’s far below the Wii and Nintendo DS, though those two systems do hold the distinction of being among the highest selling game systems of all time (the Wii also launched in Japan in the Holiday seasons). It is also below the debut of the Nintendo 3DS. It is important to note, however, that the Switch is a far more expensive machine than any of those three.

Whether or not the Switch can maintain this kind of momentum going forward is what remains to be seen- but for now, Nintendo has a good start on its hands worldwide.
