Along with revealing that Final Fantasy 7 Remake was the top selling game in the US for April 2020, The NPD Group announced that Nintendo Switch had topped hardware charts. This is in terms of both unit sales and dollar rankings. Along with this, year-to-date dollar sales for the console are currently the highest for any platform in the region’s history as per GamesIndustry.biz.
The success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons was credited for driving this growth, especially as it coincided with COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic necessitating staying at home. Interestingly, the Xbox One and PS4 did very well in terms of hardware sales as well. Dollar sales for both rose by 160 percent compared to the same month last year.
Overall hardware spending for April 2020 hit $420 million, which is the highest for the month since 2008. Console spending year-to-date is up by 30 percent year-on-year to $1.2 billion. As for spending on accessories and game cards, it’s up by 49 percent compared to last year, hitting $384 million.
