Nintendo Switch Was The Highest Selling Console In January In The US

As you may have expected, the Nintendo Switch topped charts in January, per the NPD Group.

The NPD Group has shared its report for video game hardware and software sales in the United States for the month of January, and as many may have expected, the Nintendo Switch emerged as the top selling console of the month, ahead of the PS4 and Xbox One. It was also the console that generated the most revenue during the month in hardware sales.

The Switch managed this in spite of missing out on two of the biggest releases of the month—Resident Evil 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3, suggesting the continued momentum from Pokemon Let’s Go and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, alongside the new launch of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, was enough to explain the continued demand for it.

In fact, the Switch was the only console to see a year on year increase in January, VentureBeat reports. However, its year on year gains were not enough to offset the losses suffered by PS4 and Xbox One, and overall spending on hardware fell to $199 million (down 28% from $278 million in January 2018).

Given the absurdly packed lineup the Switch has for this year, I think we can expect to see it topping the charts reasonably frequently from here on out.
