Nintendo Won’t Attend Gamescom 2024

The company won't attend "after careful consideration" amid rumors of the Nintendo Switch 2, reportedly launching in Q1 2025.

While this year’s schedule of Summer gaming showcases has yet to be outlined, Gamescom 2024 is from August 21st to 25th. Unfortunately, one big name won’t be attending – Nintendo.

In a statement to Games Wirtschaft (translation via DeepL), a Nintendo of Europe spokesperson said, “Gamescom is a key event in Nintendo’s calendar. However, after careful consideration, we have decided not to participate in Cologne this year. Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch at other events throughout Germany.”

Nintendo attended last year and, per rumors, showcased tech demos for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 behind closed doors. It included an enhanced version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild running in 4K/60 FPS with faster load times and Epic Games’ The Matrix Awakens demo. Though initially rumored to be announced this past March, the reveal is reportedly now happening in June.

Furthermore, the console could launch in Q1 2025, perhaps to coincide with the launch of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Time will tell, but for this year’s Gamescom, at least, attendees probably shouldn’t expect any announcement. Stay tuned for more details on the list of exhibitors in the coming months.
