NPD January 2014 Top Selling Games: Call of Duty Ghosts Towers Over Competition Again

The lack of any major releases in January shows through the sales chart.

The NPD January 2014 report is out and the top selling games in the United States have been revealed. Is it any surprise that Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts dominated the charts once again across platforms at retail?

NBA 2K14, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Grand Theft Auto V made up the rest of the list. Aside from GTA V, all the above relied on current and next gen software sales to drive business. The lack of any major releases in January was to blame for the lack of any change in the charts, though February and March should be somewhat different.

Square Enix will no doubt be happy that Tomb Raider made it into the charts, having released on PS4 and Xbox One near the tail end of January and still securing tenth place. Sales were for all versions combined though.

The NPD’s latest report indicated that the PlayStation 4 had outsold the Xbox One by a 2:1 ratio, though the latter reported a 47 percent software market share for both its consoles. Nevertheless, software sales were down by 21 percent.
