Octopath Traveler Rated M in Australia

For mature themes, sexual references, and violence.

One of the most eagerly anticipated Nintendo Switch games launching this year is Octopath Traveler, a brand new turn based RPG from Square Enix that channels the classic 16-bit and 32-bit RPGs of yore, delivering them with modernized mechanics.

Octopath Traveler looks fantastic—and indeed, its demo was incredibly well received too. But now, it seems as though the game’s story may have as much heft to it as its mechanics seemingly will. Octopath Traveler has been rated M in Australia, for “mature themes, sexual references, and violence”—which, to be fair, anyone who played Primrose’s story in the demo could have figured out.

Now, an Australian M isn’t equivalent to an ESRB M (and is more a rating for a game that might get T or above elsewhere)—but there is an indication here that the story in this game, in spite of its art style, may end up being substantially dark. Octopath Traveler launches exclusively on the Nintendo Switch this July.
