Oculus Rift Announced for Android Devices

Currently no plans for an iOS version of the VR headset.

Oculus VR, which is manufacturing the VR headset Oculus Rift, has announced that a mobile version of the same will be coming to Android devices. No mention of iOS was made, and the news came by way of Oculus Rift CEO Brendan Iribe, who announced it during GamesBeat 2013.

The Android version of Oculus Rift will be lighter and use your mobile device’s processor to work. It’s interesting that an iOS version hasn’t been announced, especially since Apple’s 64-bit architecture on the iPad Air, iPad Mini Retina and iPhone 5S ranks among the most powerful mobile CPUs today.

Oculus Rift is looking to release the Android version as close as possible to the release of the PC version, which will be relasing in 2014. The company is also looking to bring the device to home theatres at some point, with John Carmack even revealing that we may see a 4K resolution version at some point. Stay tuned for more details.
