Star Wars: The Old Republic didn’t manage to be profitable for EA, and the company is looking to shut down their Asia Pacific servers for the game and migrate all players to the NA network.
A local server cluster would have mitigated lag issues and would have made the gameplay experience for people situated on the region a lot easier, but it seems all players would have to connect to the north american servers now.
It was revealed that activity was less on these servers and people wanted to play on servers with a higher population count. This decision was done due to community feedback, according to Eric Musco, community manager of The Old Republic.
“One common theme from suggestions, which we heard clearly, is that everyone wants the opportunity to play on higher populated servers,” he said.
“With this in mind, we have evaluated all of the options and determined that the best solution, that will offer the best long term play experience, is to merge the APAC servers with higher populated North American servers.”
We don’t know whether this is a good thing or bad, but one thing is for sure, it would have been expensive to maintain so many servers and unifying them in one region is a good thing for them.
