The drivers for the Xbox One controller on PC, long promised, are now finally available to all Windows users. Unlike with the Xbox 360, where Microsoft released a separate version of the Xbox 360 controller that had compatibility with the PC, which needed to be purchased, here, you can simply plug in your existing Xbox One controller into your PC over micro USB, and you’ll be good to go, so long as you have downloaded the drivers.
This puts the Xbox One controller on an even footing with the DualShock 4, which has had support for PC games (and indeed, even PlayStation 3 games, albeit in a limited capacity), since launch. It also means more people will be exposed to the Xbox One controller, which while not as universally perfect as the Xbox 360 controller was, is still a hell of a controller.
The release of controller drivers comes at the head of some renewed efforts on PC gaming that Microsoft has stated it will push for again. Whether these efforts materialize into something beyond just vague promises remains to be seen. Stay tuned.
