Phil Spencer: Microsoft Lost Its Way With PC Gaming

But that all changes now, he promises.

The story of Microsoft and PC gaming is a never ending, cyclical one of broken promises, untold potential, and unsung contributions to the bigger picture. Over the past few years, as Microsoft has doubled down on Xbox, their contributions to PC gaming have dwindled to a standstill.

That has changed recently, as Microsoft has started to make outreached into PC gaming again. But people, having been burned by the company so many times, are understandably cautious. They don’t know whether Microsoft will ditch them for greener pastures again. Phil Spencer understands this, and he acknowledges it. He said at much at the PC Gaming Show. “There have been times in our past where Microsoft has maybe lost our way with PC gaming,” he said.

However, he promised, that changes with the upcoming Windows 10- it gives them a unified platform to target, Direct X 12 gives them new technologies, and they are already working on bringing some games over to PC, including Fable Legends, Killer Instinct, and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.

Whether or not this will be another flash in the pan kind of thing for Microsoft, or whether they actually support the PC long term for real this time, remains to be seen. We will keep you posted.
