Phil Spencer: Won’t Force Xbox One/PC Cross-Platform Play Among Developers

Xbox division boss addresses concerns regarding cross-platform play for Xbox One games.

Xbox division boss Phil Spencer announced at the recent Windows 10 event that forthcoming Xbox One games would support cross-platform play with PC. Speaking to Gamespot during a group interview, Spencer clarified that the feature wouldn’t be forced upon developers to support.

“I think [cross-platform play is] an enabling technology to make games great. If somebody decides that cross-platform play isn’t something that’s going to make their game great, there’s no way I’d ever create a [publishing requirement] that says you must do this.”

As far as the discrepancies between the controller and keyboard/mouse users, Spencer acknowledged the superiority of the latter in certain scenarios but also said that developers could create different playlists to support only one of the set-ups. Alternatively, developers could have playlists supporting both schemes.

“In the end, some people are hardcore about the competition, and some people just want to have fun playing. I want to make sure we’re enabling both.”
