Playstation 4: No Native Support for PS3 Titles, Gaikai Being Explored As Alternative

Of course, the larger plan involves bringing previous Playstation titles to all platforms.


As Dave Perry of Gaikai, now a part of Sony to power its Cloud services, revealed today at the Playstation event, the Playstation 4 will not natively support PS3 titles. So no backwards compatibility for Sony’s next generation console.

However, Perry did state that Sony is looking at ways to use Gaikai to have PS3 games on the PS4. The larger plan, of course, is to allow players to access PS1, PS2 and PS3 games from any platform, which has been the much anticipated plan for Cloud gaming since its inception.

While all of this is great and whatnot, Sony’s Cloud services will be rolled out in stages. So while great in theory, it will actually take a while before we’re able to play PS3 titles on the PS4 – or for that matter, any classic PS1 or PS2 titles.

Still, the potential is there and the future just keeps rolling on. Are you watching?
