The PS4 Pro is going to use a variety of techniques to hit 4K resolution for gaming, but it’s not a true 4K machine- it cannot render most of its games in 4K natively. On the other hand, Microsoft claim that the Xbox One Scorpio, their mysterious new console that is due out in Holiday 2017, and which will have a 6TFLOP GPU, will be able to deliver ‘true 4K gaming.’
However, Mark Cerny, the lead architect on the PS4 and the PS4 Pro, seems to disagree. In an interview with Japanese website AV Watch. (via DualShockers), Cerny said that at least 8TFLOPs would be necessary to deliver on true native 4K gaming- which is not something that he believes can be delivered at a coat effective price this year.
That said, he also said that users will be able to discern the difference in visual quality between PS4 and PS4 Pro games at a glance- so if that difference is clear, the difference between the PS4 Pro and the Xbox Scorpio should be even more so, even if the Scorpio is unable to deliver on its promise of native 4K gaming.
