PS4 Worldwide Shipments Are At 96.8 Million Units

The console sold 17.8 million units in financial year 2018-19.

In their recent quarterly financial briefing, Sony confirmed that the PS4 has shipped total of 96.8 million units worldwide since its launch, which is up from the 94 million shipments that were reported by the company at the end of the previous quarter.

In the entirety of financial year 2018-19 (which ended March 31st, 2019), the PS4 sold a total of 17.8 million units worldwide, exceeding Sony’s projections of 17.5 million sales throughout the financial year. Of these, 2.6 million units were sold in Q4 of the financial year (January – March of 2019), which is up from the 2.5 million units that were sold in Q4 of the previous year (though total sales across the financial year are down from the previous year). Their current projections for the current financial year stand at 16 million units. 

On the software front, the financial year saw the sale of 257.6 million software units for the PS4, of which 54.7 million units were sold in the final quarter. 37 per cent of all software sales were digital (45 per cent during the fourth quarter). Software sales have seen a continuous increase year-on-year, up from 246.9 million units sold in the previous financial year. Sony also reported that PlayStation Plus subscribers stand at 36.4 million consumers as of March 31st, 2019, up from 36.3 million at the end of the previous quarter.

Financial year 2018-19 has also been the best ever year for Sony, as well as the company’s gaming division, in terms of both revenue and operating profits. Q4 of the FY was also the best fourth quarter in the history of PlayStation in terms of revenue and profit.
