PS5 and Xbox Series X CPU “At Least 3-4x More Powerful” Than PS4, But Don’t Expect Massive Visual Leaps – Dev

"There’s still lots of room for improvement, but that will have to come from a design standpoint rather than just pure horsepower," says Víctor Pedreño of Grimorio of Games.

As we approach the release of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X at the end of the year, discussions about the two consoles’ specs are continuing to heat up- and leaks that pit the two against one another have only made things heat up even more.

Though not everything is known about the next gen consoles just yet, some things have been confirmed about both of them- and the two share quite a bit in common. For instance, both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are confirmed to have an AMD Zen 2 CPU, which is supposed to be a huge leap over the processors we see in current gen consoles. Developers have been excited about the potential of next gen consoles’ more powerful processors, and while Sword of the Necromancer’s designer and programmer Víctor Pedreño from Grimorio of Games doesn’t feel that will impact developers like himself – who easily make do even with current gen consoles – he realizes that it’s going to be a big jump.

“Supposedly, that’s going to be at least three or four times as powerful as the PS4’s processor,” Pedreño said while speaking with GamingBolt. “For developers like us that’s not going to change much, as we are more than fine with the current gen’s hardware to make the games we make. But any extra power is of course more than welcome.”

Pedreño also spoke to us about another aspect of next gen hardware- GDDR6 memory, which the Xbox Series X is confirmed to feature. According to Pedreño, this will help with “faster access times” similar to SSDs (which are also included in both new systems)- however, he feels that unlike with some past generation jumps, players shouldn’t expect a lot of improvement in terms of visuals, but rather in terms of game design.

“We are in a time where the leaps in graphics won’t be as noticeable as in, for example, the PS1 to PS2 or PS2 to PS3 jump,” he said. “There’s still lots of room for improvement, but that will have to come from a design standpoint rather than just pure horsepower.”

Grimorio of Games’ dungeon-crawling roguelite RPG Sword of the Necromancer is due out for Switch and PC this year, but currently doesn’t have a release date. Stay tuned to GamingBolt, our full interview with Pedreño will be live soon.
