With rumors of a PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro circulating, Sony is allegedly planning to discount the console’s current iteration. According to leaker billbil-kun on Dealabs, the standard PS5 will drop in price from $499.99 in the United States to $449.99.
In Germany, it will reportedly drop from €549.99 to €474.99, while the UK will see a price drop from £479.99 to £404.99. Starting dates for the discounts haven’t been announced. However, once they go live, it will perhaps be the first time that the PS5 is discounted in those regions.
It also lends further credence to Sony reportedly developing a new console version without a disc drive (and no major hardware changes). Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reported that production began in April 2023, with a launch in September. All current PS5 models will allegedly cease production by Holiday 2023.
If these discounts happen, Sony could sell off excess stock in preparation for the next model’s announcement. When that could be is anyone’s guess, but Xbox Era’s Nick Baker heard about possible PlayStation event next month. Stay tuned in the meantime for more details.
