During Microsoft’s trial with the US Federal Trade Commission over its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it said that it expects Sony to release a Slim version of the PS5 later this year. It will allegedly cost $399.99, though no official announcement has been made. While many believed this was the rumored PS5 with a detachable disc drive, it seems there may be a Slim model floating around.
Responding to a cryptic tweet from The Snitch, Xbox Era’s Nick Baker said he heard “a little while back” about a show in August for PlayStation and that the plan “was to reveal the Slim there.” He believes it could be revealed “earlier” to counter Microsoft’s victory over the FTC to acquire Activision Blizzard.
Of course, plans could always change, and others like Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson said the new PS5 is simply a “gen 2” version. Production will reportedly cease on the current model before the year is out. The new model, the same one with the detachable disc drive, will reportedly start retailing in September.
Sony has yet to say anything about any new model in development, so we’ll need to wait for more details. Stay tuned in the meantime.
I had heard a little while back that there would most likely be an August show for PlayStation and the plan was to reveal the Slim there. Maybe they're going earlier to combat the Xbox/ABK news? https://t.co/8sqyO8gnyx
