2020 was a wild year for a lot of reasons, but as much of a bad time it was in some areas, it excelled in others. One of those areas was in video games, where it seemed the industry as a whole largely came through having some of its best success, even after multiple high profile delays. Between the launch of new consoles, and some hotly anticipated titles, it was a strong year.
As reported by GamesIndustry, the UK was proof of that strong year. As we know, the Switch was the highest selling system in 2020 by wide margin, but the PS5 came in second in the region despite launching in November, even managing to outsell the PS4 “narrowly.” Almost 43 million pieces of video game software were sold in the region with FIFA 21 topping both the physical and digital charts followed by titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and, yes, Grand Theft Auto 5. You can see the full Top 20 below.
The increase of digital sales also continued in the region, as it’s reported that 67% of games that were sold were digital copies. Despite the Switch selling more consoles by a wide margin, the PS4 actually had the highest retail market share with 37.4% vs the Switch’s 35.1%. To top things off, it was also said roughly 19 million game accessories and point cards were also sold, with the DualShock 4 being the top item.
