PS5’s SSD Will “Open the Door for More Expansive Content” – Halo Co-creator

"It will just help make things a lot more seamless and fluid for the player," says Marcus Lehto.

Out of everything that Sony have revealed for the PS5 so far, its solid state drive is by far the thing that has gotten the most attention. Developers across the industry have spoken about the impact it will have on games and the way they are designed, and though it’s all theoretical at this point, there’s certainly cause for excitement.

Another developer who’s excited about the console’s SSD is Marcus Lehto of V1 Interactive, co-creator of Halo and developer of the upcoming DisintegrationSpeaking in recent interview with VGC, Lehto said that the SSD will make “a huge difference” and will “make things a lot more seamless and fluid for the player.”

“It will make a huge difference,” he said. “It will open up the door for more expansive content that can stream a lot faster. Players won’t be waiting on load screens and we won’t have to hide loading behind cinematics and that kind of thing.

“It will just help make things a lot more seamless and fluid for the player when it comes to their experience on those consoles.”

According to Lehto, developers in particular will benefit hugely from the next-gen consoles and their SSDs, because as he describes it, developing for current-gen consoles right now is like “developing for machinery in the stone age.”

“I am really excited about that because that’s one of the things that’s really hard for us in particular right now: dealing with those old platforms,” he said. “These platforms have been around for what, seven years? Developing for them is like developing for machinery in the stone age.”

Meanwhile, V1 Interactive’s Disintegration is due out for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC some time this year, though a specific release date hasn’t yet been announced. Check out some of its recently released single player gameplay footage through here.
