Fans have been hungry for any update or information on Red Dead Redemption 2 ever since Rockstar announced it last year and then went completely silent about it. When recently an image appeared online that seemed to depict what looked almost eerily like what a Red Dead game would like, people pounced on the little morsel they’d been fed with and grew increasingly sure that this was the first real screenshot of the hugely anticipated game.
Well, it isn’t. Welcome to Wild West Online, people, an open-world PVP MMO for the PC which is inspired heavily by Red Dead Redemption and hence also looks a great deal like it. It’s a game that has been in development for a long time, and the developers recently spoke about it.
“There’s an audience for this that just wasn’t being served on PC,” says publisher DJ2’s creative vice president Stephan Bugaj while speaking with PC Gamer. “So we wanted to make this big, open Wild West world with a bit of a twist that, like the best MMOs, is a place where people can really live in.”
“Resource gathering and building camps is going to have more of the social aspects of other MMOs,” Bugaj continued. “There’s going to be story, character, and gameplay-driven motives to keep playing, but we haven’t yet fully worked out what the progression system is going to be for that.”
It definitely sounds very interesting, even if it did turn out that it isn’t Red Dead Redemption 2 we’re looking at. What we are looking at, though, seems very interesting, conceptually at least.
