REPORT: Alan Wake sells 1.4 million units

You know how everyone is always talking about how Alan Wake is such a good game but, unfortunately, didn’t sell a lot? Well, it turns out they might be all wrong after all. According to a recent report by Industry Gamers, the game has sold a lot more than any of us could have expected.

According to a source close to the site, Alan Wake has sold 900,000 copies digitally. Add to that 330,000 units sold according to NPD figures and 170,000 units sold in other regions, and we get a total of 1.4 million units. Part of the figures come from the Holiday 2010 bundles that included Forza Motorsport 3 and Alan Wake. Industry Gamers says that digital sales were not counted in the total sales of the game, contrary to what Microsoft did with Halo: Reach, where they did, for some reason, count the digital sales.

Microsoft has refused to comment on this matter, but developer Remedy’s head of franchise development, Oskari Häkkinen said: “Unfortunately we can’t share numbers with you… The Wake bundles are substantial, in fact about half of the story – the untold story if you like. At the end of the day, we all love to follow charts, but the most important thing for Remedy really is about knowing how many people we reach and entertain – not necessarily what a measure or sales chart says.

“Alan Wake’s digital bundle was the first of it’s kind.

As a developer, we like testing new ground and when the digital opportunity was presented to us, we accepted. It’s good to see more of it being done now as it reflects the success of the Wake bundle.

“To take a guess, I’d presume the reason the numbers haven’t been registered is due to the untrodden ground we stepped on last year with the Wake digital bundle– Digital packages now seem to be part of business as usual, as are the sales. We certainly wouldn’t mind seeing those sales added to the pot also though.”

Alan Wake will be getting an Xbox Live exclusive sequel soon. It’ll be getting a full reveal on December 10 at the VGAs. Stay tuned for more info.
