The revamped PlayStation Plus is going to be different from its director competitor Xbox Game Pass in few key ways, chief among them being that Sony currently has no plans to launch first party games on its service day and date, but with its two higher tiers collectively offering over 700 games to subscribers, there’s plenty to look forward to.
There are still plenty of question marks, of course, especially when it comes to the library. We know a few of the big names that’ll be part of the PS Plus Extra lineup, while Sony has said that both the Extra and Premium tiers are going to have games from “every major publisher”, but other than that, we have very few details to go on.
Recently, however, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan provided further assurances on the official PlayStation podcast, saying that the revamped PS Plus’ lineup is going to be “very strong”, and that with over 200 publishers supposedly involved, it’s going to have “all the big names present.”
“We have massive publisher participation in this program,” Ryan said (via VGC). “We have all the big names present.”
“We have big publishers, we have small indie publishers,” he added. “We have over 200 partners working with us to put their content into PlayStation Plus, so the lineup is going to be really strong.”
The new PlayStation Plus service isn’t going to launch till June, so Sony still has some months ahead in which it’s likely to share details on what its catalog of games across both tiers is going to look like. Suffice to say, a lot is going to hinge on those details, and whether or not the service gets off to a good start may very well be governed by that information.
Sony has also confirmed that the PlayStation Plus Collection is going to remain unchanged and unaffected when the new PS Plus launches, and will still be offered as part of the PS Plus Essential tier. Persona 5, however, is leaving the collection in May.
Meanwhile, though PS3 games in the PS Plus catalog are only going to be playable via cloud streaming, recent reports have claimed that Sony is currently working on native PS3 emulation on PS5. Read more on that through here.
