Shawn Layden Explains Why The PlayStation Experience Keynote Ended Abruptly

Shawn Layden: You didn't want me coming and saying, "Thank you for coming and please enjoy the games."

This years’ PlayStation Experience was pretty disappointing. Apart from some big announcements like Ni No Kuni 2, Ratchet and Clank and Final Fantasy 7 gameplay demonstrations, most of the content was just filler. The show was no where close to last year’s awesomeness. Also, the show just ended. It ended abruptly without any first party reveal with Sony instead opting to conclude the show with Epic Games’ Paragon.

In a follow up Q&A on the event’s livestream, PlayStation boss Shawn Layden revealed why this was the case.

“That ending, that closure from Epic for Paragon…In a typical show I do the opening and I do the closing. But that Paragon video is so powerful. I did not want to go on after that. You didn’t want me coming and saying, “Thank you for coming and please enjoy the games.” Let that thing close it, that was drop the mic moment, that was fabulous. I am really happy with the guys at Epic [they] are going to bring to the PlayStation 4.”

In my personal opinion, the show ended abruptly. I was literally waiting for something to happen but nothing happened. Hopefully Sony will cut down on filler content for next year’s event [which Layden hinted during the stream] and end the keynote with a big announcement.
